PHILADELPHIA - Senior co-captain Bridget Settles notched her second hat trick of the season when she scored the game-winner for Temple field hockey in overtime, giving the Owls (2-4) a 4-3 win against Kent State (2-4) on Sunday afternoon.
After taking a moment to honor the lives lost 10 years ago on Sept. 11, 2001, action began at Geasey Field. The first 20 minutes were no sign of what was to come, as neither team got its offense going until Settles put in the first goal of the game off an assist from teammate Mandi Shearer in the 25th minute.
The 1-0 lead stood through halftime, but early in the second half the Golden Flashes tied it up on a penalty corner goal from Debbie Bell.
With 25 minutes left in regulation, Temple's Caryn Lambright beat Kent State goalkeeper Jahna Jordan after a pass from Katie Briglia, and put the Owls up 2-1.
The back-and-forth action would continue as Kent State's Rebecca Lee evened the score again off a rebounded shot and save on a penalty corner. Corners hurt the Owls significantly for much of the game, as the Golden Flashes at one time held an 8-1 advantage.
Settles earned a penalty stroke in the 60th minute and put it high in the back of the net to give the Owls a 3-2 lead, but less than two minutes later Kent State's Bell scored on another corner to knot the game at 3-3.
Temple came out firing in overtime, finishing with a 6-1 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner opportunities. On the third of those, with just 1:06 remaining in the overtime period, Settles was able to convert with assists from Lambright and Kaylee Keener.
The Owls will play their next three games on the road, starting with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Delaware on Friday, Sept. 16.
