RICHMOND, VA- Junior guard Khalif Wyatt scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting to pace Temple once again, but it was not enough as the defending Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond Spiders posted a 76-65 victory at the Robins Center Saturday evening. Temple falls to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in A-10 play. Richmond improves to 11-7 overall and 2-1.
It was the fourth straight game that Wyatt, the reigning A10 and Big 5 Player of the Week, led the Owls in scoring with 22 or more points. Redshirt freshman Anthony Lee grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds for the other bright spot in an otherwise disappointing outing for the Cherry and White.
A young Richmond team that had to replace four starters from last year's Sweet 16 squad, showed veteran poise from the opening tip. The Spiders took their first lead on a three-point play from their big man, Derrick Williams, 3-2, and never looked back.
An 8-0 run at the midpoint of the first half pushed the margin to double-figures, 23-13. It was a spread where the majority of the contest was played.
Freshman guard Kendall Anthony, listed kindly at 5-feet, 8 inches, provided the spark on the outside to compliment Williams' Barkley-esque frame in the paint. Anthony's steal and three-pointer capped the 8-00 run. He later drained two treys in a 9-0 run that pushed the Spiders advantage to 37-20 with 3:39 left in the half
The half ended with Richmond on top 44-25 led by Williams (12 pts, 9 rebs), Anthony (11 pts) and Darrius Brothers (10 pts).
Temple competed more in the second half, but was never able to cut the margin to single digits. Every time the Owls made a mini-run, the Spiders had an answer.
Besides Wyatt, Ramone Moore also scored in double figures with 17 points. Juan Fernandez, mired in a two-game shooting slump, scored just two points for the second straight game on 1-of-11 shooting (0-4 3pt).
As a team, TU shot 36.7 percent (22-60) and 30 percent (6-20) from three-point range.
Brothers finished with 19 points to pace the Spiders while Williams chipped in with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony added 15 points while Cedrick Lindsay had 11 points.
Temple next hosts city-rival La Salle (13-5, 2-1) on Wednesday (7:00 p.m./OwlAccess/1210 AM WPHT). It is part of a doubleheader with the TU women taking on Duquesne at 4:00 p.m.
