Temple will open the season against the Cavaliers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 at Geasey Field. On Sunday, also at home, the Owls will match up with the Blue Devils at 1:00 p.m.

Fans coming to Geasey Field can pay $3.00 per person for each game, or $5.00 per person for both days. All fans with a Temple ID will get in for free.
Virginia, ranked eighth in the Preseason NFHCA Coaches Poll, returns 19 players from its 2011 squad. All-Americans Michelle Vittese and Paige Selenski are returning to the team after taking a year off to play for the U.S. National team, including competing at the London Olympics. Without those two, Virginia finished with a record of 8-12 last season after going 18-4 in 2010 and earning a berth in the NCAA Semifinals.
The Cavaliers head coach, Michele Madison, served as the head coach at Temple for four seasons from 1989-92. Madison led the Owls to one A-10 Championship title and to three of their six all-time appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including two berths in the NCAA Regional Final.
Duke is ranked fifth in the Preseason Poll after finishing the 2011 season with a record of 14-8. The Blue Devils made their 11th apperance in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals before narrowly losing to #2 Old Dominion. Junior and Preseason All-ACC selection Emmie Le Marchand led the team with 19 goals and 45 total points last year.
Eighth-year head coach Amanda Janney is leading the Owls into their final season of Atlantic 10 play in 2012, as Temple will join the BIG EAST for all sports in 2013. The Owls lost five senior leaders from the 2011 squad to graduation, leaving Temple with a young team that boasts just one senior in veteran Katie Briglia.
Junior Molly Doyle will serve as a co-captain along with Briglia, and together the two will look to help bring eight freshmen into the fold. Also expected to take a leadership role is redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, the 2011 Atlantic 10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
“Both Katie and Molly will be strong leaders for us,” said Janney. “Katie is an amazing player who can play any position but most likely will be a midfielder for us. She will have a breakout year along with Lizzy. Seven of our players, including our team captains and Lizzy, played for U.S. Field Hockey Association (USFHA) High Performance Teams over the summer which gave them a lot of confidence and playing experience.”
With all field positions losing key seniors, the team will have some rebuilding to do in 2012. The most notable loss for the Owls is 2011 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and third team All-America selection Bridget Settles, who led the team with 20 goals and 44 total points last year. Second-leading scorer Caryn Lambright (five goals) was also lost to graduation.
Briglia will have sophomore returner and fellow forward Amber Youtz by her side this season. Youtz, an A-10 All-Rookie Team pick in 2011, scored four goals along with two assists in her debut campaign a year ago. Briglia, an A-10 First Team selection, scored twice and led the Owls with five assists.
Janney expects additional scoring power to come from junior Lauren Hunt, who played in 21 games last year. “Amber and Lauren had a strong spring season, and we expect them to create a lot of shooting opportunities for our attack,” said Janney. “Alyssa Delp and Tricia Light are two freshmen who will provide some depth on the front line. They are both fast and fit athletes and they have been impressive in preseason so far.”
Another area that will need younger players to step up is defense, with the Owls losing two starting backs in graduated seniors Becca Keener and Carissa Young.
“Molly stepped up this past spring and took over as center back,” said Janney, “and junior Mandi Shearer brings us experience as the other starting defender from last year. Our team defense should develop into a consistent force for us.”
One returner who can help the Owls at both forward and midfield is sophomore Nicole Kroener, who was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team last season and played for USFHA High Performance Team New Jersey over the summer. Kroener did not put up numbers statistically as a freshman, but was one of two freshmen to start in all 22 games a year ago along with Youtz.
On a roster of 20, almost half of those are freshmen this season. “I was so pleased that our recruiting class was so strong,” said Janney. “These eight players are from some of the best high schools and club teams in the nation, and their playing experience from national tournaments will really help our team. I feel confident that this group will make an immediate push for playing time.
“We are looking to be the fittest and fastest team in the A-10,” said Janney. “We are excited for our last year in the A-10 and for one last chance to get that elusive A-10 Championship after barely missing out last year. We are recruiting better players to join us in the BIG EAST Conference, and we are excited about that change in 2013, but for now we are focused on our team goals for this year. “
