PHILADELPHIA – After rallying to erase a 3-1 deficit late in the second half, the Temple field hockey team lost a heartbreaker to #8 Virginia (1-0) by a score of 4-3 in overtime. It was the season opener for both squads, and was the first of two contests against ranked teams this weekend for the Owls (0-1).
Rachel Sumfest scored the unassisted game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in the 15-minute overtime period, beating Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen in a one-on-one situation. Millen, who finished the game with three saves, got two of those during the high-pressure overtime period.
The first half saw Temple take control with four shots to the Cavaliers' two, and the Owls put up the only goal of the first 40 minutes of play. Lauren Hunt took a pass from Amber Youtz and got Virginia goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone to go the wrong way before slipping it past her.
The 1-0 lead stood through halftime and until five minutes into the second half when Elly Buckley scored on an assist from Sumfest to tie the game. The pair combined again 11 minutes later on a penalty corner for a 2-1 lead.
Sumfest then scored the first of what would be two goals, once again teaming with Buckley who got the assist, and with 15:10 remaining in regulation, Virginia had a 3-1 lead.
The situation looked bleak for the Owls, who still trailed by a pair of goals with less than three minutes remaining, but their persistence in earning penalty corners finally paid off. On a corner with 2:36 left in regulation, a shot by Katie Briglia was tipped in by Youtz.
After Millen was pulled from goal to give Temple an extra player on attack, Youtz tied the game with 1:30 remaining on an assist from Hannah Whitman.
The Owls recorded just one shot in overtime compared to six by Virginia, whose aggressiveness on attack finally wore down the Temple defense.
Temple will play its second ranked team of the weekend when the Owls face #5 Duke at home on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1:00 p.m.
