Amber Youtz's Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey to a 7-3 Win Over Colgate
9.22.12 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Amber Youtz, already in the nation's top 17 in points per game, notched the first hat trick of her career in Temple field hockey's 7-3 win over visiting Colgate (1-7) on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (4-5) have been on an offensive tear, now with 12 goals in their last two games.
“I love that Amber got a hat trick today,” said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. “We've been doing extra training with her in practice to get her to shoot more. She's such an unselfish player and really likes to pass the ball, but she's so talented and we want her to take more of her own shots. For her to get rewarded for that hard work today was great.”
Temple earned 10 penalty corners in the game compared to three for Colgate, and scored on three of them. Youtz got the Owls on the board in the 14th minute when she redirected a shot by Molly Doyle on Temple's second corner of the game.
Colgate answered quickly as Eliana Brown scored on the Raiders' first shot of the game with a long blast from the top left of the circle that slipped past the left side of Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen.
In the 23rd minute, Katie Briglia scored on another Temple corner with assists from Nicole Kroener and Mandi Shearer, and the Owls would hold the lead for the remainder of the game. Eight minutes later Kroener scored a goal of her own for a 3-1 lead when her hard shot from the top right of the circle made it past Colgate's Amanda DiDomizio.
DiDomizio was impressive for the Raiders despite the final tally. She made 13 saves in the first half on Temple's 16 shots in goal. In total, the Owls out-shot Colgate 23-2 in the first half and 29-12 in the game. DiDomizio finished with 15 saves in the contest.
After halftime, Colgate's Kelsey Jensen put her team within one on an unassisted shot, but it was nearly all Temple from there.
Lauren Hunt's shot found the back of the cage after a defensive miscue by Colgate in the 45th minute, and a few minutes later Hunt recorded an assist on a penalty-corner goal by Mandi Shearer.
Already up 5-2, Youtz added to Temple's cushion with back-to-back goals in the span of a minute. She took the ball down the right side of the field and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for her second goal of the game, and took a quick pass from Kroener a minute later to complete the hat trick.
Colgate got a goal from Kendall Zaharris with six minutes remaining for the final score of the game.
“I'm really proud of our team,” said Janney. “We changed our lineup around today and they adjusted really well. To get that many shots and that many goals is a huge accomplishment for our young team.”
The Owls will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Bucknell for a 2:00 p.m. game on Sunday.
