Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Penn State At Skip Wilson Field

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Baseball swept a doubleheader from Penn State at Skip Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon. The Owls won the first game, 4-2, behind strong pitching performances from sophomore Patrick Peterson and junior Preston Hill, before junior Bobby Heitzman's lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Allen Stiles to give the Owls a walk-off 3-2 win.
Game 1:
The Owls scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning on a ground ball fielder's choice from redshirt junior David Hall that scored Matt Elko. Temple added one more run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Henry Knabe securing their second straight win on the season.
Left-handed pitcher Patrick Peterson started the game for TU pitching a strong 5.0 innings allowing two earned runs while striking out three batters. Peterson won his first game of 2013 to improve his overall record to 1-2.
Junior transfer Preston Hill relieved Peterson in the sixth inning pitching 4.0 scoreless innings to notch his first save of the year. Hill only allowed one hit and struck out three Nittany Lions.
Penn State scored the first run of the game on a throwing error by shortstop Nick Lustrino during a rundown with a runner caught in between first and second base. Penn State redshirt senior Elliot Searer scored on the throwing error to give the Nittany Lions their only lead of the game.
After allowing the first run of the game in the third inning, TU bounced back in the bottom half of the inning to score two runs on RBI singles from sophomore Nick Lustrino and junior Henry Knabe.
Knabe, the team's cleanup hitter, led the team in hits (2) and RBIs (2) during the first game to help secure the Owls second home victory. Knabe increased his team leading batting average to .417 after going 2-for-4 against Penn State.
Junior Bobby Heitzman started his first game of the season, scoring two of the Owls' four total runs in game one.
Game 2:
Temple finished off the doubleheader sweep with a walk-off win in the bottom of the 10th inning on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Bobby Heitzman scoring senior Allen Stiles.
Starting pitcher Eric Peterson carried a no-hitter through the first five innings and went on to finish 7.0 innings allowing two earned runs striking out six batters to lower his season ERA to 2.55 earning a no-decision.
Ryan Kuehn and freshman Connor Staskey combined to pitch the last three innings for the Owls giving up only two hits and no runs. Staskey picked up his first career win , while Kuehn has now pitched in five games totaling seven scoreless innings.
The Owls scored the game's first two runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Allen Stiles and red-shirt junior David Hall.
Stiles led the team in hitting in the second game going 3-for-5 from the dish scoring the game winning run in the 10th inning.
The Nittany Lions were only able to score in one inning during the second game of the doubleheader. Penn State scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at two on an RBI single from J.J. White and a RBI groundout off the bat of Luis Montesinos.
After sweeping the doubleheader on Sunday and winning their last three home games, the Owls are now 6-9 on the year and will now have one day off before traveling to Lehigh for a midweek game on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
