Field Hockey Falls to #2 Maryland in the Championship Game of the Conference Cup

PHILADELPHIA - Despite a career-high 17 saves by goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, the Temple field hockey team fell 5-1 to the extremely powerful #2 Maryland Terrapins (2-0) in the final game of the Conference Cup Tournament. The Owls (1-1) held Maryland to just a single goal for nearly the first 35 minutes of the game, and also briefly tied the contest just before halftime.

"Maryland has some pretty talented players, some national teams players, and a pretty high-potent attack," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Their speed was tough for us to handle, but there was no lack of effort and no lack of hustle on our team. We're proud of our players for their tough defense. It's a learning experience...we had a lot of players get some time today against one of the best teams in the nation. We're hoping they can learn from that and we can move forward and get better every day."

The Terps' Ali McEvoy scored off a rebounded shot and save by Millen in the ninth minute of the contest to get her team on the board first.

The following 25 minutes were a stalemate, during which Millen made eight of her saves and Taylor Shronk came up with a defensive save for the Owls. Late in the period, with just a minute and half remaining, Temple took control of the ball on a breakaway after a corner by Maryland. Amber Youtz drove it down the field and passed to an open Alyssa Delp to put Temple on the board.

The celebration of the goal was unfortunately a short-lived one for Temple, as the Terps answered in the final seconds of the half. On a Maryland corner, Millen made a save on the Terps' first shot but Alyssa Parker collected the rebound and put it in the cage to give her a team a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Maryland scored all three of its second-half goals over a 13-minute span, the last of those on a direct corner with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.

Temple will play its second Big Ten opponent of the season next week when the Owls travel to Penn State for a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 6.
