PHILADELPHIA - Two familiar and challenging foes await Temple field hockey for the Owls' second weekend of the 2013 season. After traveling to longtime rival #6 Penn State (1-1) for a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 6, the Owls (1-1) will return home to face former Atlantic 10 foe Richmond (0-2) on Sunday, Sept. 8 at noon.

Penn State will be Temple's second Big Ten opponent of the season, as the Owls played Ohio State last weekend, earning a 4-1 win over the Buckeyes. It was the program's first victory over a Big Ten team since 1998 when the Owls defeated Michigan State.

The win over OSU put Temple into the championship game of its own Conference Cup Tournament, where TU suffered a 5-1 loss to #2 Maryland. In all, five different players scored for Temple over the weekend. Leading the way in points so far is junior and Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Amber Youtz who has a goal and two assists.

Freshman Katie Foran scored the first goal of her career against Ohio State, and it proved to be the game-winning goal.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for her efforts in the cage, as she recorded a career-high 17 saves against Maryland and had a saves percentage of .793 for the weekend.

SCOUTING PENN STATE
The Nittany Lions opened the season with a 3-1 win at #8 Old Dominion before falling 4-2 at #7 Virginia. Prior to those games, Penn State also played #2 Maryland in an exhibition, losing 4-1. The Lions returned eight starters this season from a team that won both the Big Ten regular season title and Big Ten Tournament title a year ago.

Junior Taylor Herold and senior Brittany Grzywacz lead the way so far for Penn State with two goals apiece. Both were among the top six point producers from the 2012 season.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. PENN STATE
Penn State owns the all-time series against Temple, as the Owls have come away with just one win in 32 games, back in 1983. Last years' meeting resulting in a 5-1 win for Penn State, and the Lions took a 4-0 victory on their home turf the year before that.

PATRIOT DAY
With Sunday's game being the nearest to September 11, Temple field hockey is dedicating the contest to the observance of Patriot Day. Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. There will be a moment of silence after the starting lineups are announced, to honor those individuals who lost their lives.

SCOUTING RICHMOND
Richmond opened the season with 2-1 losses to both American and Louisville at home, with the loss to American coming in overtime. The Spiders returned eight starters from a 16-5 team in 2012, a team which went undefeated in the Atlantic 10 to win the regular season title. Five all-conference selections are among the returners, including All-Americans Rebecca Barry and Taylor Deitrick.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. RICHMOND
Richmond also has a very strong all-time record against Temple, winning 19 of 21 contests. The Owls lost 4-1 to their former A-10 foe in 2012, but one of the all-time wins came in 2011 by a score of 2-1 at home. Janney also was coaching during the Owls' other victory in 2009. Many of the recent games have been decided by one goal, with three contests in the past six seasons going to overtime.
