TEMPLE EARNS FIRST NATIONAL RANKING IN 12 YEARS; OWLS RANKED 11TH IN PENN MONTO/NFHCA DIVISION I NATIONAL COACHES POLL
For the first time in 12 years, Temple field hockey is ranked in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The poll, released on Sept. 10, has the Owls ranked 11th, which is the highest standing of any team not ranked in the previous poll. It is the first NFHCA national ranking for the Owls since the program was briefly ranked 17th in September, 2001. Prior to the late 90's, the poll was run through the NCAA. In 1990 and 1991, the two seasons in which Temple advanced to the NCAA Regional Final, the team was ranked as high as eighth in the NCAA Coaches Poll.
NATIONAL FIELD HOCKEY DAY
September 14 has been designated as the second annual National Field Hockey Day by USA Field Hockey. The event was established to connect coaches, clubs, athletes, umpires and those who simply enjoy the sport for a day dedicated to proudly displaying their passion for the game. "National Field Hockey Day is USA Field Hockey's chance to encourage our members to share the game with friends and promote our sport on a national level," said Steve Locke, Executive Director of USA Field Hockey. "We are excited to enter our second year of this initiative and look forward to even more participation from our amazing field hockey community." SO FAR IN 2013...
The Owls began the season with a 4-1 win vs. Ohio State out of the Big Ten, and a week later they defeated their second Big Ten team with a 3-0 shutout and upset of #6 Penn State on the road. Temple also has a 3-2 overtime win over former Atlantic 10 foe Richmond under its belt. The only blemish on the Owls' record so far is a loss to #2 Maryland, winners of the national championship in two of the past three seasons.
MOLLY DOYLE NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK; LIZZY MILLEN NAMED TO HONOR ROLL
Senior Molly Doyle is the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week after scoring two goals at #6 Penn State and another vs. Richmond. She recorded an assist on the Owls' third goal against the Nittany Lions, and had the game-winning assist vs. Richmond. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen has been outstanding in the cage for Temple, and for the second-straight week she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Her 17 saves vs. #2 Maryland tie for fourth so far for saves in a game among all NCAA Division I goalkeepers. She is ranked ninth in the national standings in saves percentage at .814.
SCOUTING DELAWARE
The Blue Hens have gone 3-1 to start the season, with a 5-2 win vs. Ohio, a 2-1 overtime loss to #16 Boston University, a 4-2 win vs. Central Michigan and a 2-1 win over Lafayette. Delaware returned eight starters from an 8-12 team in 2012, including its top four goal scorers. Junior Kelsey McKee, a Preseason All-CAA selection, led the team with 11 goals and 24 points last year.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. DELAWARE
Delaware leads the all-time series 18-11-1 over Temple. The Blue Hens won last year's meeting at Geasey Field, 4-3, but the Owls came out on top in the last meeting in Newark by a score of 2-1 in 2011.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
The Hawks are still looking for their first win of the season, having gone 0-3 to start the year. Monmouth suffered a tough, 2-1 overtime loss at #15 Northeastern in its first game, before falling 5-1 to Kent State and 4-2 at Michigan State. The Hawks finished at 8-13 in 2012 and return just five starters from that team. Senior Alex Carroll is the only player with two goals so far this season, and she was an All-NEC First Team selection last year.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MONMOUTH
Temple and Monmouth are tied at 2-2 in the all-time series. The Owls won 3-2 on the road last season, but the Hawks won the year before that, 2-1 at Geasey Field.
