PHILADELPHIA - Just over a minute into overtime, Temple junior Amber Youtz scored the game-winning goal to give the Owls (3-1) a 3-2 win over visiting Richmond (0-3). Youtz got the feed from Molly Doyle and drove all the way down the field where she reverse tipped the shot into the back of the cage.
The win caps a big weekend for Temple, after the Owls defeated #6 Penn State on the road two days ago, 3-0. The win was only Temple's third all-time against Richmond, who owns the series record 19-3.
"It was a great win for us," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Our team handled a lot of defensive pressure today. Just to know that we can handle a lot of shots is great, and Lizzy made some amazing saves. That gives us a lot of confidence. Our defensive unit was outstanding...Our girls did a great job to keep their composure and fight through some tackles in a very physical game, and find a way to win."
Youtz scored twice in the contest, while Doyle also had a goal in addition to her game-winning assist.
Early in the game it was Richmond controlling the offense, and the Spiders struck first in the seventh minute with a goal by Emma Johansson off an assist from Amy Cooke on a corner play.
The Owls earned their first penalty corner of the game in the 19th minute, and similar to recent games, they made it count. Doyle scored on the direct corner with assists from Nicole Kroener and Mandi Shearer to tie the game at 1-1.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Youtz scored unassisted on a shot to the near post to give the Owls a 2-1 lead and the momentum heading into halftime.
The 2-1 lead stood through the first 14 minutes of the second half until the Spiders' Kimberly Sportack scored on a corner to tie the game once again.
The last 20 minutes were scoreless for both teams, and featured some huge plays from Lizzy Millen in the cage for the Owls. She recorded three saves in less then a minute of action near the end of regulation, and finished with six in the game.
Just 11 seconds into overtime, Richmond's Rebecca Barry had a shot on goal that was once again saved by Millen, as was a second shot 14 seconds later. After a Richmond foul, Doyle sent the ball to Youtz who drove down field for the game-winner.
Richmond finished with 16 shots to Temple's seven, and also earned seven penalty corners compared to two for the Owls.
Temple will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 13 in a 7:00 p.m. game at Delaware.
