PHILADELPHIA (Palestra) - It was an exciting last few minutes as Temple men's basketball nearly came all the way back from an 11-point deficit, but La Salle held on for a 74-68 win to snap what had been an eight-game losing streak against the Owls (5-11, 2-1 Big 5). Tyreek Duren led the Explorers (11-6, 2-1 Big 5) with 20 points including some key late free throws.
Anthony Lee recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Quenton DeCosey kept his double-figure scoring streak alive for the season with a game-high 21 points, and Dalton Pepper finished with 15 points for the Owls.
Getting a starting nod for a third straight game was Devontae Watson, who scored a career-high seven points to go with a career-high seven rebounds.
La Salle led by as many as 11 points on multiple occasions in the second half, shooting 61 percent from the field. Temple never led in the second half, but cut the deficit to just two on a Pepper layup with 38 seconds remaining. The Explorers hit 3-of-4 at the line in the final seconds, and a late turnover prevented the Owls from getting another shot.
The first half was a high-scoring one for the first 10 minutes, but slowed in the latter part as shooting percentages dropped for both teams. Neither team ever led by more than five, but La Salle closed the half on an 11-2 run for a halftime advantage of 36-31.
Temple was slow to get going, trailing 10-5 before its offense started to come alive.
The Owls tied the game at 14 and 17, and shot over 64 percent over the first nine minutes of the contest. Josh Brown capped a 10-5 run that gave Temple its first lead of 21-19 at 11:04.
Pepper hit three treys in the opening half, the third of which gave Temple its largest lead of five, 28-23 at 7:22, but the Owls made just one field goal the rest of the way. Pepper's nine points led Temple at the break, while Lee had eight. La Salle's Tyrone Garland led all players with 10 at the half.
Much like the first half, the Owls had a slow start to the second as they hit just two of their first 10 attempts from the field before picking up the pace.
Lee scored 11 of his 19 total points to help keep Temple within striking distance in the second half, including four putbacks to finish with a game-high seven offensive rebounds. DeCosey also came alive in the second half with 16 points after being held to just five in the first.
La Salle had its last 11-point lead with 10:17 remaining in the second half before DeCosey scored five points in a 9-2 run for Temple.
From there, La Salle went back up by as many as eight with a minute and 34 seconds to go. Temple then scored six straight points with four of those coming from Pepper, but could get no closer than two.
Temple will return to conference play in its next game, a 7:00 p.m. contest at UConn on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
