PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 16th-ranked Temple field hockey team will face the third-ranked UConn Huskies in the BIG EAST Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m. The Owls (14-6) are looking for their first conference tournament title since 1994, and will be facing defending BIG EAST and NCAA champs UConn for a second time in nine days.

The winner of Sunday's game gains an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The top-seeded Huskies knocked off a stubborn fourth-seeded Providence team 3-1 in the semifinals while Temple eliminated No. 2 seed Old Dominion 2-1 in the other semifinal contest. UConn has won 13 BIG EAST postseason tournament titles.
Both teams have players who won BIG EAST individual awards. Temple's Amber Youtz was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. She scored the winning goal in the ODU contest and leads all NCAA Division I players in goals (27) and points (62) for the season. UConn is led by Roisin Upton who won BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Charlotte Veitner who scored two goals in the win over Providence and is the team's leading scorer.Â
Temple is making its 12th straight appearance in a conference tournament, and second straight appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament after 10 Atlantic 10 Tournaments in a row. This year marks the first appearance in a conference final since 2011. The Owls are looking to earn their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1992, with the Atlantic 10 Tournament title in 1994 not earning the team a berth in the NCAA's. Temple has made a total of six NCAA appearances (1982, 1983, 1984, 1990, 1991, 1992) and won its first game four times.
The Owls trailed 1-0 in their semifinal contest against ODU before coming back and pulling ahead on goals from Katie Foran and Youtz, assisted by Paige Gross and Taylor Shronk.
The Owls narrowly lost to the Huskies on Nov. 1 at home, falling 4-3. Temple led 3-2 for the majority of the second half before UConn's Veitner scored twice in the final five minutes. Freshman Rachael Mueller scored twice for the Owls in that contest.
Youtz is also the active career leader in NCAA Division I with 69 career goals and 165 career points. Her goal vs. ODU on Friday moved her alone into third place all-time at Temple in career goals and also moved her into third place all-time in career points.
Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made three saves for Temple in the BIG EAST Semifinal win, with all three coming in the second half to help the Owls preserve the lead. Millen currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division I with a save percentage of .786 and leads the BIG EAST in saves percentage while ranking third in saves per game. Her 407 career saves rank sixth all-time at Temple.
UConn comes into Sunday's championship game having won nine straight and with an overall record of 15-3. Temple trails UConn 6-2-1 in the all-time series and has lost five straight against the defending BIG EAST and NCAA champs.
