Field Hockey Records Season-Opening, 4-2 Win Over Northeastern

8.29.14 | Field Hockey

Postgame Interview With Coach Janney and Amber

LANCASTER, Pa.
- Two goals by senior Amber Youtz helped lead Temple field hockey to a 4-2 season-opening win against Northeastern (0-1) at The Spooky Nook on Friday night. It was the Owls' first game of the 2014 Conference Cup, and they'll face #10 UMass on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Temple scored the only goal of the first half, and took a 3-0 lead in the game before Northeastern got on the board. Overall, the Owls out-shot the Huskies 14-8 in the contest.

"A lot of things were clicking tonight," said head coach Amanda Janney. "The team has been working so hard in preseason, and it was great to see it result in a big win today. We scored four goals, and I'm happy that we had three in the second half. I think we're one of the fastest and fittest teams in the nation and showed it tonight."

Sophomore Ali Meszaros collected the ball after it deflected off a Northeastern player in the 14th minute of the game, and put it in the back of the cage. It was the lone tally of the first half, and was the first career goal for Meszaros.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Youtz was fed a pass from the right side by Paige Gross, and got it past Northeastern goalkeeper Becky Garner for a 2-0 Temple lead. Ten minutes later, freshman Rachael Mueller recorded a goal in the first game of her career when she knocked it in off a rebounded shot and save.

Mueller's goal gave Temple a short-lived 3-0 lead, as the Huskies answered just seconds later when Emmy Zweserijn snuck one past the Owls' Lizzy Millen.

Youtz gave Temple some insurance with less than seven minutes remaining, converting a penalty stroke that was earned by Tricia Light.

The Huskies put one more past Temple with less than five minutes remaining, scoring on their third of three straight corners.

Millen finished with two saves for the Owls, while Garner made five for Northeastern.
