Field Hockey Earns 2-0 Shutout Win Over #10 UMass

LANCASTER, Pa. - The first win over a ranked team in the 2014 season came early for Temple field hockey, as the Owls improved to 2-0 on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout victory against #10 UMass (0-2). Temple dominated offensively throughout the game with 11 shots on goal compared to just three for the Minutewomen.
"The team played outstanding today," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "I really think it was a huge win because our team defense played amazing with Lizzy (Millen) in the cage, and our backfield really stepped up as well. UMass is a great team with some really strong forwards, and our defense was the best I've seen since the start of preseason. We have a team goal to be ranked nationally, and this puts us in the right position to move forward."
Millen made three saves to preserve the shutout, including a big save on a strong UMass penalty corner shot with just over 10 minutes remaining.
After inserting a Temple corner in the 11th minute, Nicole Kroener was able to redirect a subsequent shot by Paige Gross to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. The score stood for nearly the next 36 minutes of playing time as Temple's offense kept the ball mostly on the UMass end of the field.
With 11 minutes elapsed in the second half, Amber Youtz scored her third goal of the young season. Gross recorded her second assist of the game on a give and go with Youtz, who used a reverse stick to get it past UMass keeper Sam Carlino.
For the game, Temple earned nine corners compared to four for UMass. Carlino finished with nine saves in the contest.
The Owls will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Rutgers for a 3:00 p.m. game.
