PHILADELPHIA
- Temple field hockey faces two tough challenges this weekend as the Owls head out on the road to Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 5 and to #4 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Owls and both of their opponents come into the weekend with records of 2-0. Live stats for both contests can be viewed through the above links, and there will be subscription-based webcasts for both games on the Rutgers and Duke websites.

Temple and Rutgers will be playing for the 37th time, with the Owls holding a 23-11-2 all-time lead in the series. Temple has won the last three straight meetings, including a 2-1 win at home last season.

"It's always a battle with Rutgers," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "It's always a very intense, physical game. They represent New Jersey and we represent Pennsylvania and we both want to win for our state. We're both familiar with each other and recruit a lot of the same players, so that adds to the intensity as well.

"We know it will be a good game. We had a great conference win against them last year when they were in the BIG EAST. Now they're in the Big Ten and that helps our RPI as well, and we want that win over a Big Ten team."

Duke leads Temple 8-1 all-time, and the Owls have lost seven straight against the Blue Devils. Temple's only win came back in 1993 by a score of 1-0 in OT at Duke. The Blue Devils went 17-7 in 2013, and advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship game against UConn.

"We're excited to take a flight to North Carolina," said Janney. "The scheduling worked out perfectly. They have a great facility, and we have a lot respect for their coaching staff and their program. Duke had great success last year and made a great run through the postseason, getting to the national championship game. We expect a very competitive game on Sunday, and it will make us better prepared for conference play."

Perfect Start
The Owls' 2-0 start is the first since 2010, due primarily to Coach Amanda Janney's notoriously tough scheduling. For the past three seasons, Temple's early losses were always to Top 10 teams. This year, the Owls took down their first Top 10 opponent and in decisive fashion, as they shutout #10 UMass, 2-0.

Multiple Honors for Millen
Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was named both the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and the Corvias ECAC Defensive Player of the Week after the opening week of the 2014 season.

Millen was credited with both of Temple's wins in the opening weekend of play, boasting league-best marks of an .833 saves percentage and a 0.52 goals against average. She made two stops in a 4-2 win over Northeastern before rejecting three shots against #10 UMass en route to a 2-0 shutout victory.

Eight Ranked Teams on the Slate
As of the release of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll, Temple will face eight teams ranked in the Top 25. The Owls already took down one of those, #10 UMass, and next up is #4 Duke on Sunday. Temple will face #1 Maryland next weekend. The Terrapins have won nine straight against the Owls, with three of those coming in the last three seasons.

The next Top 25 poll will be released on Sept. 9.

Youtz Moving Up the Ranks
Senior forward Amber Youtz has already made her mark on Temple field hockey in a big way, and she is continuing to move up the career record lists in her final season.

With three goals in Temple's opening weekend of play, Youtz has now scored 45 goals as an Owl to tie recent graduate Bridget Settles for sixth place. She needs just one more goal to tie for fifth, and six more to tie for fourth.

Youtz has recorded 109 career points to rank fifth, needing eight more to tie for fourth. Youtz will likely move into the top 10 for assists before long. She currently has 19 assists in her career, needing four more to break into a tie for 10th place.

100 For Janney
Temple Head Coach Amanda Janney earned her 100th career victory on Oct. 27, 2013 in the Owls' 3-2 win at Lafayette, and her career record now stands at 102-87. Janney is tied for the second-winning coach in Temple field hockey's long history. Gwen Cheeseman-Alexander (1980-88) holds the top spot with 115 wins, while Janney and Lauren Fuchs (1993-2004) are currently tied with 102 wins.

2013 In Review
The Owls are coming off one of their best seasons in program history after finishing at 14-6 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST Conference in 2013. Temple was nationally-ranked for the last nine weeks of the 2013 season, entering the NFHCA Coaches Poll at #11 on Sept. 10, and earning a #19 ranking prior to its final game of the year. The Owls finished at #17 in the NCAA RPI rankings, and was one of four BIG EAST teams to rank in the RPI Top 20.

Then-junior Amber Youtz led all players in Division I for much of the season in goals per game and points per game. She was named to the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America Second Team, the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region First Team, the 2013 All-BIG EAST First Team, the 2013 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and the 2013 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. GK Lizzy Millen, a junior in 2013, posted five shutouts and was named to the BIG EAST Second Team.

Temple lost three seniors to graduation, including Molly Doyle who was named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Second Team and the BIG EAST Second Team.

The Owls earned the fourth seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament, advancing to a conference tournament for the 11th year in a row. Their season ended in the BIG EAST Semifinals with a 3-0 loss to #8 UConn, and the Huskies went on to win both the BIG EAST Tournament and NCAA Tournament.
