#16 Field Hockey Hosts Delaware in Home Opener on Friday

PHILADELPHIA - The 16th-ranked Temple field hockey team will play its home opener on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3:00 p.m. against Delaware (3-2). The Owls will be honoring both Patriot Day (Sept. 11) and National Field Hockey Day at Geasey Field, and admission for all fans is free. There will be both a free live webcast and live stats available through the links above.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, the Owls (3-1) will travel to #3 Maryland (3-1) for a 2:00 p.m. game. There will be a live webcast (subscribers-only) HERE, and live stats HERE.
HEADLINES
• Temple is 3-1 overall after a 1-1 weekend that saw the Owls dominate in a 6-1 victory at Rutgers before falling 3-0 at #4 Duke...In the opening weekend of play, the Owls took down Northeastern, 4-2, and also earned a shutout victory against #10 UMass, 2-0.
• The Owls earned a #16 ranking in the Week 1 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released on Sept. 9...Temple was not ranked in the preseason poll.
• Junior forward Tricia Light recorded her first career hat trick with three goals in the 6-1 win at Rutgers, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
• After the opening week of the season, senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and also the Corvias ECAC Defensive Player of the Week for Division I after recording an .833 saves percentage and recording a shutout win vs. #10 UMass with three saves.
• 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America Second Team honoree Amber Youtz, a senior forward, scored three of Temple's six goals in the first two games (both wins), including the insurance goal in the win over #10 UMass.
• Temple and Delaware will be playing for the 32nd time, with the Blue Hens holding a 19-11-1 lead in the series...Delaware has won the last two meetings including a 2-0 win in Newark last year.
• Maryland leads Temple 15-8-2 all-time and the Owls have lost nine straight against the Terrapins...Temple's last win came back in 1994 by a score of 2-1 in OT at Maryland.
• The Terps (3-1) will host Drexel on Saturday before facing Temple on Sunday.

TEMPLE RANKED #16 IN NFHCA COACHES POLL
Temple earned a #16 national ranking in the Week 1 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released on Sept. 9. The Owls earned a 2-0 shutout win over then-#10 UMass, and have also defeated Northeastern and Rutgers. Temple's only blemish is a 3-0 loss at #Duke. The Owls were unranked in the preseason poll, but were ranked for the final nine weeks of the 2013 season, entering the poll at #11 this same week a year ago.Â
Temple senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen has played a major role in the Owls' success so far. Millen currently ranks 22nd in NCAA Division I in goals against average (1.38), and ranks 28th in saves percentage (.762). Both numbers are good enough for second among all goalkeepers in the BIG EAST. Millen was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after week one, and she made a total of 11 saves in two games in week two.
NATIONAL FIELD HOCKEY DAY
September 13 has been designated as the second annual National Field Hockey Day by USA Field Hockey. The event was established to connect coaches, clubs, athletes, umpires and those who simply enjoy the sport for a day dedicated to proudly displaying their passion for the game. "National Field Hockey Day is USA Field Hockey's chance to encourage our members to share the game with friends and promote our sport on a national level," said Steve Locke, Executive Director of USA Field Hockey. "We are excited to enter our second year of this initiative and look forward to even more participation from our amazing field hockey community." STIFLING THE SCARLET KNIGHTSÂ Â Â
In the 37 times Temple and Rutgers have played each other, the Owls had only once before scored at least six goals against the Scarlet Knights. In 1991, Temple beat Rutgers 7-1 at home. This past Friday, the Owls earned a 6-1 victory thanks to three goals from Tricia Light in her first career hat trick. Also scoring for Temple was freshman Rachael Mueller with her second goal of the season. Senior Nicole Kroener and junior Alyssa Delp both recorded their first goals of the season in the win, while sophomore Paige Gross notched her fourth assist of the year.
MULTIPLE HONORS FOR MILLENÂ Â Â
Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was named both the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and the Corvias ECAC Defensive Player of the Week after the opening week of the 2014 season.Â

As of the release of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll, Temple would face eight teams ranked in the Top 25. The Owls took down one of those, then-#10 UMass, who is no longer ranked. Temple recently suffered its first loss at the hands of #4 Duke, and next up on the ranked teams list is a game at #3 Maryland on Sunday.Â

The Owls are coming off one of their best seasons in program history after finishing at 14-6 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST Conference in 2013. Temple was nationally-ranked for the last nine weeks of the 2013 season, entering the NFHCA Coaches Poll at #11 on Sept. 10, and earning a #19 ranking prior to its final game of the year. The Owls finished at #17 in the NCAA RPI rankings, and was one of four BIG EAST teams to rank in the RPI Top 20.
Then-junior Amber Youtz led all players in Division I for much of the season in goals per game and points per game. She was named to the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America Second Team, the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region First Team, the 2013 All-BIG EAST First Team, the 2013 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and the 2013 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. GK Lizzy Millen, a junior in 2013, posted five shutouts and was named to the BIG EAST Second Team.
Temple lost three seniors to graduation, including Molly Doyle who was named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Second Team and the BIG EAST Second Team.
The Owls earned the fourth seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament, advancing to a conference tournament for the 11th year in a row. Their season ended in the BIG EAST Semifinals with a 3-0 loss to #8 UConn, and the Huskies went on to win both the BIG EAST Tournament and NCAA Tournament.
YOUTZ MOVING UP THE RANKSÂ Â Â
Senior forward Amber Youtz has already made her mark on Temple field hockey in a big way, and she is continuing to move up the career record lists in her final season.Â
With three goals in Temple's opening weekend of play, Youtz has now scored 45 goals as an Owl to tie recent graduate Bridget Settles for sixth place. She needs just one more goal to tie for fifth, and six more to tie for fourth.
Youtz has recorded 109 career points to rank fifth, needing eight more to tie for fourth. Youtz will likely move into the top 10 for assists before long. She currently has 19 assists in her career, needing four more to break into a tie for 10th place.
