PHILADELPHIA - With four goals in just the first 11 minutes of the game, #16 Temple field hockey pulled away from visiting Delaware (3-3) early on in what became a 5-1 win for the Owls (4-1). Five different players scored for Temple in the team's home opener at Geasey Field.
The Owls have a long history with Delaware, and it was the Blue Hens who had won the previous two meetings as well as five of the last six.Â
"It's huge for us (to get this win)," said senior forward Amber Youtz. "We came out here with a lot of heart and we wanted to prove ourselves this year and prove we have a great team, and I think we did that today."
Temple's Central Dauphin duo had a big game, as the Owls got a goal and two assists from sophomore Katie Foran (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin), as well as a goal and an assist from Youtz (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin).
Junior Tricia Light scored on a a corner less than five minutes into the game, off an assist from Foran who would finish with a team-best five points in the win. Less than two minutes later, the Central Dauphin duo teamed up as Foran scored on a fast break thanks to a perfect pass from Youtz on the right side.
Youtz kept the attack going with a role reversal in the 10th minute, scoring on a fast break 2 on 1 opportunity and getting the assist from Foran. The final early blow came just one minute after that, when Kroener collected a rebound off a blocked shot and put it past Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans.
"The team came out strong and set the tone in the first few minutes," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Our attack is just so fast and fierce and it was nice to get on the board early...we have so many different scoring threats which is great, and our backfield is playing really strong too."
In the 25th minute of the first half, freshman Maiyah Brown knocked in Temple's final goal from eight yards out on an assist from junior Sarah Deck. The Owls carried that 5-0 lead through most of the second half, giving up just one goal in the 63rd minute when the Blue Hens' Jacki Coveleski scored on a rebounded shot and save.
Temple goalkeepers Lizzy Millen and Haley Mitchell each played one half, and each finished with two saves.
The Owls finished with a huge advantage in penalty corners, earning 11 to Delaware's three, and also took 19 total shots to the Blue Hens' eight.
The next test is another tough one for Temple, as the Owls will travel to #3 Maryland for a 2:00 p.m. game on Sunday, Sept. 14.
