COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite an impressive defensive effort that included 17 saves by senior Lizzy Millen, the #16 Temple field hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss on the road at #3 Maryland on Sunday afternoon. The Owls fall to 4-2 overall, while the Terrapins improve to 5-1.
Millen's 17 saves tied her career high, previously set against the same opponent a year ago. The Owls finished with 18 total saves, also getting a defensive save from junior Rachel Steinman. All three Maryland goals were scored on penalty corners, of which they earned eight in the game.
"Lizzy played outstanding," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "She always gets up big for big games. I think she's one of the best goalies in the nation, and she showed it today that she could handle the pressure of some big shots. We gave up goals on corners that weren't necessarily her play."
Millen made three big saves in the first 13 minutes, including a diving save on the first Maryland penalty corner. The Terps earned a second corner just seconds after, and got their first goal in the game by Maxine Fluharty in the 14th minute.
The Owls earned their first corner at 19:11 of the first half, but a shot by Katie Foran was blocked. Foran had another chance in the 22nd minute on a redirected shot, but that one went wide.
On Maryland's third corner with 11:30 left in the first, the Terps took a 2-0 lead with a goal by Carrie Hanks.
Millen made two more saves in a row near the nine-minute mark, and would finish with six in the first half.
Foran nearly had a goal with just over three minutes remaining in the half, but Steffi Schneid recorded a defensive save for the Terps as she was able to clear it out of the cage.
The Terps continued to play aggressively on offense in the second half, and were awarded three straight corners near the 29-minute mark. Eight minutes later Maryland got two more corner opportunities, and scored on the second of those, which was their eighth of the game. The goal was by Sarah Sprink with assists from Katie Gerzabeck and Moira Putsch.
Tricia Light had one of Temple's cleanest shots of the game with 18:15 remaining, but it was saved on the near post by the Terps' Brooke Cabrera. The Owls had a corner three minutes later and used a timeout to talk it over first, but did not get a clear shot when play restarted.
Millen made seven saves in the final 20 minutes to keep the Terps from getting on the board again, including two in the final seconds on Maryland's Alyssa Parker in a one-on-one situation.
Temple will also play its next game on the road, heading to Bucknell for an 11:00 a.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 20 before returning home to play Drexel at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21.
