LEWISBURG, Pa. - With a pair of goals by All-American senior forward Amber Youtz, the 13th-ranked Temple field hockey team earned a 2-1 road win at Bucknell (4-2) on Saturday morning. The Owls (5-2) will turn right around and play Drexel at home on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Youtz's two goals put her at 48 all-time, and she now stands alone in fifth place in program history at Temple. She leads Temple with six goals so far this season.
Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made seven saves in the contest, including four in the final nine minutes to preserve the lead for the Owls.
"We got really spectacular individual performances from Amber and Lizzy today," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Amber's been working a lot on her shooting skills and it was nice to see her execute today, especially on the second goal that she worked really hard for.
Bucknell is a really talented team and put a lot of pressure on us in the second half. I think our team responded really well to shut them down after they scored."
Temple was the clear aggressor early on, earning a number of opportunities on penalty corners. The Owls had five corners in the first 17 minutes, but Bucknell goalkeeper Shannon Keen made four saves to keep Temple from getting on the scoreboard.
Finally in the 20th minute, Youtz took a pass from former Central Dauphin High School teammate Katie Foran, and her shot from five yards out made it past Keen to give Temple a 1-0 lead.
Youtz had one more shot a couple minutes later, but it was saved by Keen and the 1-0 lead stood through halftime.
With 11 minutes gone in the second half, Youtz took the ball from midfield and drove it in to the right side of the circle, hitting a long shot to the far right post for her second goal of the game.
Temple's 2-0 lead was short-lived, with the Bison scoring their lone goal just three minutes later. Bucknell earned just two corners in the game, getting them back-to-back with 20 minutes remaining. On the second of those, Amie Pritchard redirected a shot on the play and put it past Millen for a goal.
Millen had two big saves in one-on-one situations with nine minutes remaining to keep Temple in the lead. Four of her seven saves in the contest came in the final nine minutes.
Temple will look to make it an undefeated weekend when the Owls host Drexel at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
