CINCINNATI - Making its first 11 shots of the second half and going on to shoot a blistering 77 percent, Cincinnati (12-5, 3-2) earned an 84-53 win over Temple men's basketball on Saturday night at Fifth Third Arena. The Owls (12-7, 3-3) looked strong for most of the first half and trailed by just a point at the break before the Bearcats' second-half onslaught.
Temple played without senior point guard Will Cummings (12.9 ppg) who was sidelined with a strained muscle in his lower left leg. Cummings was injured in the Owls' loss to Tulsa on Jan. 10, the first in what has become a three-game skid for Temple.
For the game, Cincinnati shot 53.7 percent from the field and 77 percent at the line (17-of-22). Four players finished in double figures for the Bearcats, led by Jermaine Sanders with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
Senior guard Jesse Morgan led Temple with 15 points and hit 3-of-5 from long range, while freshman forward Obi Enechionyia came off the bench for a season-high 14 points. Enechionyia hit 6-of-8 from the field including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
After a slow start that saw the Owls go 0-for-6 and trail 7-0, Temple picked up the pace in a hurry. The Cherry and White rattled off nine straight points in what became a 14-2 run, and took a 14-9 lead at the midway point of the half. Morgan scored eight points in that run, hitting two shots from long range.
Four ties followed and neither team was able to get separation the rest of the half. For a three-minute stretch, both teams' points were scored only at the free throw line. The shots began falling again in the final two minutes, but Temple never held a lead in the final five and a half minutes.
The Owls trailed 29-26 before Morgan hit a pair at the line with 35 seconds left. Temple's defense locked down on the Bearcats' final possession, and Cincinnati held just a one-point, 29-28 lead at the break.
The second half got out of hand quickly for Temple, with the Bearcats scoring at will. Enechionyia hit a pair of treys, but they were the only points in the first eight minutes for Temple as Cincinnati surged ahead with a 21-6 run.
The Bearcats took a 31-point lead of 69-38 with 8:14 remaining, and did not allow the Owls to come within fewer than 27 the rest of the way. Cincinnati hit 20-of-26 from the field in the half (76.9 percent) which included making 7-of-10 from behind the arc.
Temple will look to get back on track at home on Thursday, Jan. 22 when the Owls face USF at 6:30 p.m. (ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT).
