Field Hockey Set For Road Games at Providence and Drexel This Weekend

10.15.15 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Two road games are on the slate for Temple field hockey this weekend, as the Owls head to BIG EAST foe Providence on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., and then come back closer to home for a 2:30 p.m. game at Drexel on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Temple is looking to snap a six-game losing streak, with four of those losses coming by just a single goal (4-3 at #19 James Madison, 4-3 at American, 3-2 in 2OT vs. #12 Liberty, 2-1 in OT vs. Bucknell). Seven of Temple's 10 losses have come against teams ranked in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, and the Owls will face at least one more when they head to #11 Old Dominion on Oct. 20.

Senior Alyssa Delp leads Temple with nine goals this season. In Temple's most recent win at Monmouth (Sept. 18), Delp recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Owls in their 4-2 victory. Delp's nine goals rank in a tie for second among all players in the conference, and her goals per game average of 0.69 ranks 36th among all players in NCAA Division I. With 32 goals scored (2.46 goals per game), Temple ranks third among the teams in the BIG EAST Conference. The Owls rank second in the BIG EAST in goals scored off corners with 11 (0.85 per game).

Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell made a career high 12 saves in the Oct. 4 loss to Liberty, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts. She nearly matched that effort the following week, making 11 saves in Temple's loss to UConn.

The Friars started the season with six straight losses, three of those coming to teams now ranked in the Top 20. Last weekend, Providence lost a 3-1 BIG EAST game at Villanova but rebounded with a 3-2 non-conference win at Quinnipiac.

Junior forward Adrienne Houle leads Providence with six goals, while senior midfielder Emma Mackie is the team leader with six assists.

Temple has won all four games it has played against Providence all-time. The Owls came back from 3-0 halftime deficit at Providence a year ago, winning 4-3 in overtime. In 2013, Temple won 3-1 at home.

After starting the 2015 season with five losses, Drexel has since gone 4-3. The Dragons' most recent two losses were to #2 UConn (6-0) and #18 James Madison (4-0). They will face CAA foe William and Mary at home on Friday before hosting Temple on Sunday.

Junior forward Idrienne Walker leads Drexel with five goals, followed closely by junior midfielder Jessica McCarthy and freshman midfielder Megan Wiest with four goals apiece.

The Owls hold an 18-9-1 lead in the all-time series against city rival Drexel. Last year's contest was a heated one, with the un-ranked Dragons earning a 1-0 overtime win on #13 Temple's home turf. The year before, the #16 Owls won 1-0 at #20 Drexel. Prior to the start of the 2015 season, Temple and Drexel scrimmaged at Geasey Field, with the Owls winning 1-0.
