Field Hockey Falls 1-0 in a Shootout at Providence

10.16.15 | Field Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After battling through a scoreless 100 minutes of action, Temple field hockey lost another heartbreaker, this time in its first shootout in 23 years. Providence made three of its attempts to the Owls' two, winning the BIG EAST contest 1-0 on Friday night.

For the Owls (3-11, 0-2), it was their seventh consecutive loss, with five of those coming by just one goal including three in overtime. Providence now stands at 4-11 overall and 2-1 in league play.

It was the first current format shootout for Temple field hockey in program history. Prior to 2011, penalty strokes decided a game after two overtime periods. Since 2011, the attackers can now run with the ball in a one-on-one situation against the goalkeeper. The Owls had last gone to strokes in an Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship game against UMass in 1992. Junior Paige Gross and sophomore Hattie Kuhns both made their shootout attempts in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, but the Owls made just those two in five rounds while the Friars made three to seal the win after the final Temple miss.

Temple senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell made 10 saves in regulation as the Friars recorded 10 shots on goal to the Owls' three. Deidre Clymer stopped all three for Providence to keep the Owls scoreless.

The Owls' defensive unit was impressive all game long, as they were able to keep Providence scoreless on a total of 16 penalty corners including nine in the second half. Temple earned four corners, but none in either overtime while Providence had four.

"It was a great defensive effort," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "Though we gave up 16 corners, we played well and aggressively, not allowing a goal in those down number situations. Unfortunately, when you play that well defensively, you are looking for more return on the attacking end and we weren't strong or purposeful enough in our attacking circle to get the job done."

Mitchell made the only two saves needed in the first half to keep the game knotted at 0-0. Providence took four total shots with two on goal, while the Owls took two shots that both missed the target. The Friars scored an apparent goal in the 12th minute on a penalty corner, but the shot was ruled illegal.

The Friars had a clear advantage in time of possession in the second half, but the Owls held strong. Providence earned a total of nine second-half penalty corners but came up empty thanks to three more saves made by Mitchell. Temple had three corner chances of its own, but recorded just a single shot on goal in the second half by Gross.

Four of the Friars' corners were in the last 10 minutes to make it exciting down the stretch, but Temple fought them off every time. One of the Owls' three second-half corners came with just a minute left, but they were unable to get a shot.

Mitchell made another pair of saves in the first overtime period, the second on a Providence penalty corner with less than a minute left. Redshirt freshman Maris Stern had a strong shot on goal for the Owls, but Clymer came up with the save for the Friars. Kuhns was able to get a shot on goal in the second overtime, but Clymer again made the only save she needed to make. The Owls out-shot Providence 4-3 in the final overtime, but their other three shots went wide or high.

Temple will come back closer to home for its next game, a non-conference contest at Drexel on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m.
