Lead Slips Away for Men's Basketball in 67-58 Loss at #21/21 SMU

2.19.15 | Men's Basketball

DALLAS, Texas - For the second time this season, Temple men's basketball let a double-digit second-half lead slip away against #21/21 SMU (22-5, 13-2), this time falling 67-58 on the Mustangs' home court. The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for the Owls (19-8, 10-4), who led by as many as 10 in the first five minutes of the second half.

Senior guard Will Cummings scored 14 points to lead Temple while also dishing seven assists and recording a career-high seven steals. Junior guard Nic Moore led all players with 18 points for SMU.

With just under four minutes left in the game, SMU used a 10-0 run to come from three points down and take the lead for good. After struggling from the line in the first half (2-of-9), SMU made 18-of-24 in the second including 8-of-8 in the final minute to seal the win.

Junior forward Jaylen Bond pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Temple and was one of three players to finish with eight points. Senior guard Jesse Morgan drained 3-of-4 from long range to score nine points.

Temple took an early 7-2 lead and never trailed in the first half, holding off the Mustangs with strong perimeter shooting. The Owls hit 5-of-11 from long range (45.5 percent), getting two of those buckets from Morgan. After missing three full games due to injury, freshman forward Obi Enechionyia came off the bench and promptly hit a three-pointer. He finished the half as one of Temple's leaders with six points.

The Owls led by six or more for the final five minutes of the half, and built their lead to as many as nine on three occasions. The only point of the final minute and 30 seconds was a single SMU free throw, and Temple took an eight, point, 33-25 lead into the break.

Both teams combined for just four points in nearly the first four minutes of the second half. Bond was the only player to score in the first five minutes of action for Temple, but a Cummings jumper at 14:50 gave the Owls their largest lead of 10, 39-29.

From there, a 7-0 SMU run cut the margin to three at 12:42. The Owls pulled back ahead by five, but the Mustangs answered with an 8-0 run for their first lead of the game with eight and a half minutes left. With four minutes left, an Enechionyia dunk made it 52-49 Temple before SMU's 10-0 run swung the momentum away from the Owls for good.

Temple will continue a challenging road trip at second-place Tulsa on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern (CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT).
