8.26.15 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Under the direction of first-year head coach Marybeth Freeman, the Owls begin the regular season on Friday by hosting #3 Maryland as part of the 2015 Conference Cup Tournament. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Geasey Field and will be webcast live on OwlsTV.

Temple students can pick up a free Temple-Penn State football ticket at Friday's game, while supplies last. Students must have their Temple Student ID in order to receive the ticket. One ticker per TUID. If students already have the Wild Cherry Football Pass they do not need to attend to get their ticket. Wild Cherry Football Passes can be picked up at the Liacouras Center Box Office from 10 a.m.- 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information visit http://owlstix.com/football/#subTabs5.

Out of 19 regular season games the Owls will play, five of those will be against opponents ranked in the NFHCA Top 20 Preseason Coaches Poll, released Aug. 25. Despite a #14 ranking at the end of the 2014 season, Temple will have to work its way back into the poll in 2015. The Owls have had one test so far in the preseason as they hosted Drexel in a scrimmage on Aug. 22. Temple came out with a 1-0 win after a goal by sophomore Maiyah Brown four minutes into the second half. Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell played the full game in the cage for the Owls, recording four saves en route to shutting out the Dragons.

• Temple's staff is almost entirely new for the 2015 season. Joining Freeman is associate head coach Roz Ellis, assistant coach Katie Gerzabek and director of operations Carissa Vittese. • Senior Alyssa Delp was a unanimous selection to the 2015 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, while the Owls were picked to finish third in the conference.
• Temple returns eight of 11 starters from the 2014 season, including second-leading scorer Katie Foran who netted seven goals as a sophomore last year.
• Junior Paige Gross led the Owls and tied for third in the BIG EAST with 11 assists a season ago.
• The Owls have three team captains for the 2015 season, seniors Sarah Deck (midfielder), Taylor Shronk (defender) and Rachel Steinman (defender).
• The Owls were honored recently by the BIG EAST Conference for having the top grade point average among all BIG EAST field hockey teams.
• Maryland leads Temple 16-8-2 all-time and the Owls have lost 10 straight against the Terrapins. Temple's last win came back in 1994 by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Maryland.
