Field Hockey Dominates in 9-0 Win Over Towson; Most Lopsided Victory in 25 Years

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With the biggest margin of victory in 25 years, Temple field hockey dominated from start to finish in a 9-0 win against Towson (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at Maryland. Eight different players scored for the Owls (1-1) as they out-shot the Tigers 39-4 in their second game of the Conference Cup Tournament.

Senior Sarah Deck scored two goals and had an assist to lead Temple, while six others also scored in the victory. All 25 players on the Owls' roster saw action in the game, including freshman goalkeeper Chloe Johnson who made a save in her seven minutes of action to preserve the shutout.

The win was the first Temple victory for first-year head coach Marybeth Freeman, who was thrilled with the team's performance.

"When we have that many people able to positively contribute for us, it just shows how deep we are," she said. "We've said from the get-go that this is going to be a collaborative effort both in successes and in losses, that we will do everything as a team. We set goals for ourselves today and achieved all of them."

Earning penalty corners was key to Temple's success. The Owls had 16 corner opportunities to Towson's two, and they scored on five of those. "We were really able to step up and execute when opportunities presented themselves," said Freeman. "Having five of our nine goals come off corners is awesome."

The last time Temple beat an opponent by nine goals was on Oct. 29, 1990 in a 9-0 win for the Owls against Lehigh. Three-time All-American Jane Catanzaro was a senior for Temple that season, and scored four goals in the lopsided win.

Temple set the tone early with back-to-back goals in the sixth minute. Senior Tricia Light was first on the scoreboard with just five and half minutes elapsed, taking a rebounded save off her own shot on a corner play and sending it past Towson goalkeeper Emilee Woodall. Right off the restart, the Owls got back on offense and junior Paige Gross scored off an assist from Deck.

Deck deflected in the third goal of the game on a corner in the 15th minute. The Owls got one more goal before halftime as junior Katie Foran scored on a rebounded corner shot in the 29th minute.

Just over five minutes into the second half, a corner paid off yet again as Deck scored her second goal of the day off assists from Light and sophomore Rachael Mueller. Five minutes later, Mueller scored her own goal to make it 6-0 Temple.

The scoring barrage continued with a goal by senior Alyssa Delp in the 50th minute, off an Erin VanHorn pass to the far post.

Towson made a string of three saves in the 55th minute to slow Temple down, but the Owls weren't done yet. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Keer, who attacked on offense all game long, saw her efforts pay off with a goal on her own rebound in the 59th minute. Freshman Jessika Daniels then deflected in a shot by Keer to record her first career goal with three minutes left in the game.

Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell played nearly 63 minutes in the cage for Temple, making a save on the only shot on goal she faced.

The Owls will use the confidence gained to face a challenging opponent in their next contest. Temple will head to #8 Penn State on Friday, Sept. 4 for a 6:00 p.m. game.
