10.27.17 | Field Hockey
Keys to the Game
> After giving up an early goal in the sixth minute, the Owls answered quickly when redshirt senior Sarah Keer scored with a strong shot on a direct penalty corner in the 10th minute.
> The Flames got their first of two goals from Jill Bolton in the 15th minute, and made it a 3-1 game at halftime after a penalty stroke goal for leading scorer Agueda Moroni.
> Liberty got another goal from Bolton and two from Summer Parker in the second half, taking a 6-1 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining.
> The Owls' seventh and final penalty corner of the game in the 64th minute paid off, as sophomore Maddie Merton took a redirect from Keer and scored.
Game Notes
> Keer finished with three total points to lead the Owls, bringing her season total to 10.
> Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock made eight saves for Temple including six in the first half.
> Freshman Dani Batze and junior Nellie Doyle each recorded a defensive save for the Owls, bringing their season total to 13. They rank second in NCAA Division I in defensive saves.
Quotable
> "I think Maddie had another strong performance in goal," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "Madison Merton did a very good job handling the ball in tight spaces to generate a lot of our attacking opportunities. I think Sarah's drag was very well executed and I'm happy with the way Nellie stepped up in the backfield. These are really positive things for our team in a variety of different lines, and I know we're going to continue to have these strong contributions from them in our final game of the season."
> "We could put our heads down and understand that we've had these really tough losses, or we could take advantage of the opportunity that Sunday gives us (to play another game). We have a great group of seniors that I know want to finish strong and on a high note. It's not just going to be on the shoulders of our seniors. It'll take the whole entire team over the course of 70 minutes to play against a strong Lafayette team."
Next Up
> The final game of the season will see the Owls host non-conference foe Lafayette for Senior Day at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29.
