9.24.18 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Fresh off an exciting home win, Temple field hockey (2-6, 0-1) begins a three-game road stretch, all in one week, with a make-up game at #19 Liberty (6-2, 1-0) at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25. The BIG EAST contest was originally scheduled for Sept. 14 but was postponed due to Hurricane Florence.

Scouting Temple
> Temple is coming off a 2-1 win vs. Towson on Sept. 23, beating the Tigers on a penalty stroke goal by Kathryn Edgar with time expired in regulation. It was the Owls' first home win of the season.
> Edgar recorded two goals and an assist last week for Temple, also scoring in a 3-2 double-overtime loss in the Owls' BIG EAST opener vs. Providence. Temple's other two goals last week were scored by redshirt freshman Grace Shanton (vs. Providence) and sophomore Dani Batze (vs. Towson).
> The Owls' staff was completed on Sept. 18 with the official hiring of assistant coach Ross Gilham-Jones, a native of Great Britain. Gilham-Jones, who will primarily coach the team's attack, most recently spent almost a year coaching the WC Eagles club team out of Pottstown.
> Temple earned its first victory of the season at Lafayette on Sept. 7, winning 3-2. Redshirt senior Maris Stern scored on a penalty corner in the 63rd minute to break a 2-2 tie. In the Owls' other game that weekend, they lost 6-2 to Kent State after leading 2-0 at halftime.
> With nine defensive saves in 2018, Temple leads all teams in NCAA Division I. Sophomore Dani Batze has four defensive saves (tied for second in the nation) while junior Becky Gerhart has three (tied for sixth in the nation).
> Senior Chloe Johnson tied her career high with 17 saves vs. Providence, and made five more in the win vs. Towson. Johnson's 10.13 saves per game rank second among all players in NCAA Division I, and as a team the Owls rank second nationally with 11.5 saves per game.

Scouting Liberty
> The Flames are coming off an 8-11 season in 2017 that saw them advance to the BIG EAST Championship before falling 3-0 to #1 UConn.
> Liberty ranks 19th in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, and is 6-2 overall this season. The Flames won their BIG EAST opener at Villanova on Sept. 21, 4-0, capping three straight wins. The first of those was a 3-2 defeat of #7 Virginia.
> Among the returners this season for the Flames is All-American Agueda Moroni who currently leads the BIG EAST with 14 goals and 4.25 points per game (second in NCAA Division I). Moroni matched Liberty's school record with 19 goals as a sophomore in 2017.

Series History vs. Liberty
> Liberty leads the all-time series against Temple, 3-1. The Owls won the first meeting 3-0 in 2011 but the Flames have gone 3-0 vs. Temple since joining the BIG EAST.
