Men's Cross Country Travels to Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational

9.26.18 | Men's Cross Country

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University men's cross country squad will travel to South Bend, Ind. this Friday, Sept. 28 to compete in the nationally prominent Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Eight Owls will make the trip to race against some of the highest caliber teams in the country, moving up to the prestigious Blue Division this year for the first time in program history.

About the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational
> The 63rd annual Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational will consist of 39 teams, including 37 women's teams and 31 men's. There will be six races throughout the day, with the women facing a 5,000 meter course and the men running five miles.
> The Owls will compete in the second race of the meet, wrapping up the Blue Division right after the women at 1:45 p.m. sharp. The Cherry and White earned the advancement to the top division after winning the Gold Division last year, with a Temple top finish from Kristian Jensen.
> The field this year boasts 20 regionally ranked men's teams competing, including the Owls who remain steady at the No. 7 spot in the Mid-Atlantic.
> Amongst the crew of regionally ranked opponents are three nationally recognized squads, including No. 2 BYU, No. 29 Furman and a hosting Notre Dame team that received votes in the latest USTFCCCA poll.

From the Coach
> "This meet is going to be an extremely exciting opportunity to see how we've grown this season," said head coach James Snyder. "The squad has the chance to compete against a handful of nationally ranked opponents that they do not normally see face-to-face, and our goal is to make our mark as a team who deserves to be in the top group."
> Snyder discussed the top group of men for Temple, and the impact they can make at this challenging invitational. "Each person racing at Notre Dame is in a great position fitness-wise. We have discussed learning to be comfortable hearing splits we've never heard before, and having performances we've never seen before because of the training they have endured. Seeing that they are fitter and stronger than ever before at this point in a season, they are anxious to compete and mix it up with these top programs in the country."

Last Time Out
> The men's cross country squad heads to Notre Dame after of a dominant performance at the Army West Point Open two weeks ago. The Owls captured their second straight team victory of the season, when they thrived off of patience and focus to defeat the competition at the challenging 7,600-meter course at Bowdoin Park.
> Eight Owls will head to the Joe Piane Invitational to represent Temple against some of the best cross country teams in the nation. Traveling to Notre Dame will be Louis Corgliano, Zach Seiger, Kristian Jensen, Kevin Lapsansky, David Fitzgerald, Johnathan Condly, Donovan Mears and Harry Powell.
> Seiger had an impressive performance at the Army West Point Open, leading a Temple trio that swept the top three places and finishing with a time of 23:51.6. His move to the front of the pack placed him in Temple's number one spot for the first time in his college career, and was his first-ever individual title as an Owl.
> Corgliano finished right behind Seiger, earning second place and crossing the finish line at 23:53.7. He played a crucial role in the race plan for the Owls as he broke away from the pack about 3.5 miles into the race, stretching the competition thin and allowing Temple to pace into its final 2,000 meters.
> Less than two seconds later, Lapsansky earned a third place finish after running the course in 23:55.4. Two other Owls finished in the top 10, as Anton Harrsen earned fifth and Jensen finished eighth. The sophomore pair finished just six seconds apart, with Harrsen clocking a time of 24:01.4, and Jensen crossing the line at 24:07.9.
> The Owls will be joined for the first time by redshirt junior Harry Powell, who will make his debut in a Cherry and White uniform at the Joe Piane Invitational this Friday.
