Field Hockey Blanks La Salle to Open Season with Consecutive Shutouts for First Time Since 2008
9.1.19 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – Twice is nice for Temple Field Hockey as the Owls posted their second straight 3-0 shutout this Labor Day weekend. This time the victim was city-rival La Salle and it marked the first time Temple opened with consecutive shutouts since the 2008 campaign. New coach Susan Ciufo's squad improved to 2-0, matching the number of wins the entire 2018 season.
Recapping the Game
> Unlike Friday's 3-0 win over Merrimack, the Owls got on the scoreboard quickly to start this contest. Temple converted its third corner in the first six minutes as sophomore Nienke Oerlemans pushed the ball to fellow sophomore Kerrie Lorenz, who laid it off for junior Dani Batze, who blasted it home at the 5:32 mark.
> The Owls dominated play the remainder of the first two quarters, out-shooting the Explorers, 7-1, but were unable to put another goal past La Salle keeper Cassie Kincaid (6 saves).
> Redshirt sophomore Natalie Burns made it a 2-0 advantage for Temple midway through the third quarter. The play was set up off passes from Claire Thomas to Mia Sexton, who found Burns alone in the circle for the score.
> La Salle came to live offensively in the third quarter, outshooting Temple, 6-1, and registering all four corners of the period.
> Lorenz made a tremendous individual effort to drive in and blast home the final goal four minutes into the final quarter.
> Temple's defense was superb in front of junior goalkeeper Cristina Carotenuto, who made two saves in posting her second shutout.
Statistically Speaking
> Temple only out-shot La Salle, 11-8, but nine of the Owls attempts were on goal as opposed to just two for the visitors.
> The penalty corners were 7-5 in favor of Temple.
Quotable
> "I think it is pretty special for the ladies. They have been working really hard and to be able to come out and to post the first two-game shutout for an opening weekend since '08 is a really positive note for them to capitalize on some things that we have been doing this preseason." – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo
Next Up
> Temple takes to the road next weekend, playing at Kent State on Friday, Sept. 6 (11 am) before taking on Maine (9 am) the following day at Kent State.
