Field Hockey Looks to Continue Hot Start at Kent State

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team will take its hot start on the road this weekend for a pair of games at Kent State. The Owls (2-0), which opened the season with consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2008, will play at Kent State on Friday (11 am) before taking on #24 Maine Saturday (9 am) on KSU's Murphy-Mellis Field.
Scouting Temple
> The Owls not only posted back-to-back 3-0 home shutouts against Merrimack and La Salle to start the season under first-year head coach Susan Ciufo, but it was the first season-opening win since 2014.
> Redshirt freshman Kerrie Lorenz was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, leading the team and the conference in scoring with two goals and one assist. It was the first time an Owl won the honor since 2014.
> Junior co-captain Dani Batze had both game-winners for the Owls and was named the Philadelphia Field Hockey.com Offensive Player of the Week.
> Making her first start, junior goalkeeper Cristin Carotenuto made six saves in recording her first two shutouts.
> Sophomores Claire Thomas and Nienke Oerlemans are tied for the team lead with two assists while redshirt sophomore Natalie Burns (1 goal, 1 assist) and senior Kathryn Edgar (1 goal) also scored during the opening weekend.

> The Golden Flashes opened their season with a 1-2 record, splitting home Labor Day weekend matches against Saint Francis (5-2 W) and Michigan State (0-1 L) before falling at #12 Louisville (4-2) Wednesday.Â
> Kent State also led by a first-year head coach, Kyle DeSandes-Moyer, returns leading scorers, Clara Rodriguez Seto, and Emma Bressler, who finished the season with 20 and 17 points, respectively.
> Also returning for KSU is senior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish, who started all 20 games in 2018 and posted a 2.14 GAA.
> Kent State was selected by the conference head coaches to finish second in the MAC regular season in the annual preseason poll released earlier this week.Â
> Senior Leila Richter leads the Golden Flashes in scoring so far with one goal and three assists.
