Field Hockey Tops #20 UConn, Qualifies for BIG EAST Tournament

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team topped No. 20 UConn Friday afternoon 3-2 in overtime, the first time the team has defeated UConn since 1989 and the first time the team has defeated a ranked opponent since 2016. With the win over the Huskies, the Owls match their win total from last season and qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament for the second-straight season.Â
Recapping the Game
> Temple maintained possession for the majority of the first quarter, but all three of the team's shots missed the mark.
> The Owls got on the board less than a minute into the second frame, with Devin Kinzel scoring on the rebound off a UConn save.
> The Huskies evened the score later in the quarter, scoring off a penalty corner to even the match.
> Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal in the third quarter, but Kerrie Lorenz found the back of the net at the 51-minute mark off a penalty corner to put the Owls up 2-1.
> UConn once again answered and found the equalizer, scoring with less than five minutes left on the clock to force an overtime situation.
> The Cherry and White were awarded a penalty corner less than two minutes into the first overtime period, with Tess Muller and Claire Thomas passing to Julianne Kopec to seal the victory. The goal was Kopec's sixth of the season.
