Temple Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Old Dominion

10.17.25 | Field Hockey

NORFOLK, Va. – Despite the Temple University field hockey team holding a pair of leads, Old Dominion's Serena Langendoen registered the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lift the Monarchs past the Owls, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at the LR Hill Complex.

The Owls (10-4, 2-3 BIG EAST) look to right the ship on Sunday against Penn, while the Monarchs (6-7, 4-1 BIG EAST) clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament with the victory.

Temple is now tied with Villanova and Quinnipiac for fourth place and the final spot in the BIG EAST Championship. Each team holds a 1-1 record against the others with two games remaining in the conference schedule.

How It Happened

Temple opened the scoring in the second quarter. Off a penalty corner inserted by Mara Lenting and stopped by Mathéa Lassalle, Marsha Ariesen fired a shot that was saved, but Agustina Tucceri made a heads-up play, blasting the rebound into the back of the cage.

The Owls held the advantage until ODU tied the contest with 11:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. From a penalty corner, Amelie Zielcke scored off assists from Avery Jackson and Nicolette Saccomandi.

Temple regained the lead with less than five minutes remaining, as Lucia Magro converted a penalty stroke for her fifth goal of the season. She is now 2-for-2 on strokes this year.

ODU answered just over a minute later. Jackson redirected a long pass from Mackenzie Olsommer to even the score at 2-2 with 3:19 remaining.

The contest advanced to overtime and then a second extra period. With 3:45 left before penalty strokes, Langendoen netted the game-winner off a penalty corner.

By the Numbers

Temple led 10-9 in total shots, while ODU held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Monarchs also held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Goalkeeper Alex Lepore (10-3) made all four of her saves in a busy first quarter. ODU's Suus Broers countered with three saves.

Magro is now tied for third on the team with classmate Kathryn Gauvin, each recording five goals and two assists for 12 points.
