Owls go 2-0 for the week as head coach Janney earns 50th career win
Box Score
PHILADELPHIA - A two-goal second-half deficit was not too much for the Temple field hockey team to overcome as the Owls (3-3) defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-6) by a score of 4-3 in thrilling fashion.
The win is Temple head coach Amanda Janney's 50th of her career. Janney is currently in her fifth season with the Owls, as well as in the fifth season of her head coaching career.
After a 1-0 victory on Friday at Lafayette, the Owls were looking to construct their first winning streak of the season and even their record at .500. But the Scarlet Knights, despite coming into the contest without a win, were not going to go away without a fight.
Rutgers forward Sarah Dunn opened up the scoring in the first half to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Temple senior Mandi Ruth found the back of the cage to even things up. For Ruth it would be just the beginning of a fantastic day offensively.
The goal did not phase Rutgers as Jessica Hoh would find the back of the net two more times to give the Scarlet Knights a commanding 3-1 lead only three minutes into the second half. Unfortunately for the visitors, the two-goal lead wouldn't be enough as the Owls began to pick up the pressure and intensity throughout the second half.
Senior Kristen Wanner would begin the comeback for the Cherry and White with a rocket off of a penalty corner to bring the Owls within a goal. Both Charise Young and Mandi Ruth assisted on the goal which was Wanner's second of the season. The goal visibly energized the entire home squad as they would refuse to let Rutgers gain any momentum.
With 15 minutes remaining, sophomore Bridget Settles gained control of the ball along the end line and began dribbling towards the goal. As Settles was closing in on the goal she sent a perfect pass to Kasey Ruth who was waiting in the middle of the circle and fired a low hard shot that would be stopped by only the cage.
The goal knotted the score up at 3-3 and set the scene for Mandi Ruth's late game heroics. With 1:15 left in regulation, Ruth received a short pass from Wanner and took a few dribbles around a defender before unleashing the game-winner, her second goal of the game.
Sisters Mandi and Kasey Ruth wound up playing a part in each of Temple's goals on the day with Mandi registering two goals and an assist on eight shots while Kasey scored one goal. The Owls led in shots (12-6), shots on goal (6-3) and penalty corners (9-3).
The Owls will have a few days off after playing two games in three days. Their next contest is slated for Friday evening at the University of Delaware with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
