Field Hockey Takes Down #15 Drexel in Convincing Fashion, 5-1

PHILADELPHIA - There were plenty of reasons for the Temple field hockey team to celebrate after a 5-1 win against #15 Drexel on Sunday afternoon. For the Owls, it was their first win over a ranked team since 2009, their first win over Drexel since 2007, and the win also snapped a three-game losing streak. Freshman Alyssa Delp scored the first two goals for Temple, the first of which would prove to be the game-winner.

Temple (3-5) controlled the offense early and often against the Dragons (5-3), scoring its first goal less than two minutes into the contest. Getting her second of two shots on a rebound, Delp found the back of the cage for a lead that Temple would never relinquish. She scored in a similar situation before 10 minutes had elapsed in the game, giving the Owls a 2-0 cushion that would prove almost immediately necessary.

The Dragons' Lindsay McArdle scored less than a minute after Delp's second goal, slipping one past Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen who had just made a save on McArdle's first shot.

The 2-1 score stood until near halftime, when Temple was awarded a penalty corner. The Owls' unconvential approach on the corner paid off, as Mandi Shearer was in perfect position on a pass from Katie Briglia and notched her first goal of the season. That score gave Temple a 3-1 advantage just two minutes before halftime, but the Owls would add to the lead quickly in the second half.

Sydney Hibshman got the first goal of her career just over three minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Amber Youtz and directing the ball past the right side of Drexel keeper Jantien Gunter. The first goal for Hibshman just happened to come against a team that features her sister, Lauren Hibshman, as a freshman starter.

Youtz later added to her point total for the day when she scored the Owls' fifth and final goal with 14 minutes remaining off a rebounded shot and save by Gunter.

Millen finished with nine saves for Temple, and Haley Mitchell made it double-figures in saves for Temple when she recorded one in the final 10 minutes.

Temple head coach Amanda Janney was enormously impressed with her team's defensive effort, particularly in light of junior defender Molly Doyle's absense today due to illness. She praised the play of freshman Taylor Shronk as well as Millen's, and noted how impressive it was for Temple to give up only a single penalty corner to the Dragons. The lone corner is the fewest given up by Temple this season, and the Owls had a stretch of five games where they gave up at least 10 corners.

The Owls have one game remaining in their five-game homestand, and will take on Colgate next Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
