#15 Temple Beats La Salle 5-1 Behind Second Consecutive Hat Trick for Amber Youtz
10.12.14 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - With her second hat trick of the weekend, senior forward Amber Youtz led #15 Temple field hockey to a 5-1 win against La Salle (6-6) on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. Youtz scored three goals for Temple (10-4) after scoring four in the Owls' win vs. Villanova two days ago.
"It has been amazing to see Amber improve over her four years," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "She's worked so hard on and off the field to get to the level she's at. It's great to see her executing and getting the recognition. We're very proud of her. She's hitting the ball great right now, she's executing on corners, and she's doing everything you want a top killer forward to do.Â
Her mentality makes her stand out. She's fierce and she never lets down, and she works so hard to make sure she finds a way to score."
Youtz has now recorded seven career hat tricks, and has done so for a second time in back-to-back games. When she achieved the feat during the 2012 season, she was the first player to do so since Hall-of-Famer Jane Catanzaro in 1990. Catanzaro-Delaney was in attendance at today's game, one of 24 alums of the program who came back to celebrate Alumni Day as part of Homecoming Weekend.
Temple dominated the game offensively with 14 shots on goal compared to three for the Explorers, and the Owls earned eight penalty corners to La Salle's two.Â
"Today was a great showing of our passing game," said Janney. "We were able to really move the ball around and have long passing combinations. The attack executing this weekend, scoring so many goals, is a great sign that we're doing better in October and improving every day. We're very happy with the attack, and our defense kept La Salle out of the circle for the majority of the game, which is a good sign for us."
Temple led 3-0 at halftime, with all three of those goals coming in a three-minute span. Youtz got things started in the 13th minute, dribbling into the circle and beating La Salle goalkeeper Rachel Hartman one-on-one.
Alyssa Delp scored off a pass from Katie Foran three minutes later to make it 2-0, and it was just 30 seconds later that Youtz put in another one for the Owls. She was in good position for a pass from Maiyah Brown, and snuck it past Hartman for a 3-0 lead.
The three-goal lead stood for the next 24 minutes of clock time. Four and half minutes into the second half, the Explorers earned their first of two penalty corners in the game, and Eileen Dzwill took a pass from Olivia Leaman on the corner play to put her team on the board.
Hartman made three saves for La Salle over the next 22 minutes, but Temple remained aggressive and it paid off in the final stretch.
Nicole Kroener found a wide-open Foran on the left side in the 63rd minute, and Foran took a hard shot that found the back of the cage. In the final minute, Temple was able to convert on its eighth corner as Youtz scored off assists from Kroener and Paige Gross. Kroener finished with three assists on the week, while also playing a key role in Temple's defensive effort.
The Owls will play their next three games on the road, including two next weekend. First up is a BIG EAST contest at #19 Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
