PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 16th-ranked Temple field hockey team advanced to the 2014 BIG EAST Championship game with a 2-1 win against #17 Old Dominion (11-8) on Friday afternoon at Providence College. The third-seeded Owls (14-6) came back from a 1-0 deficit to lead second-seeded ODU 2-1 by halftime, and that score stood as the final.
Temple will face top-seeded and #3 UConn in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies defeated host Providence 3-1 in the day's other semifinal contest.
The championship game is Temple's first since 2011, and first as a member of the BIG EAST Conference. The win over a ranked team is also the first for the Owls since the second game of the season.
"I think it's just a great show of character for our team that we did go down, and we knew we couldn't go down by two and we fought right back," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "The will to win on our team and the competitiveness is amazing."
The Central Dauphin duo, Katie Foran and Amber Youtz, were the Owls' goal-scorers in the game, with those goals coming five minutes apart in the first half.
The Owls primarily controlled the ball early on in the game, but the possessions soon evened out and both teams earned a corner in the first 13 minutes.
In the 15th minute, the Monarchs' Caitlin Walsh sent a ball in from the right and Victoria Rezette made ODU's first shot on goal count. She corralled it and one-timed it to the left post past Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen for a 1-0 lead, but it was the only shot that would get by Millen in the game.
Five minutes later the Owls evened the score when Foran scored off a strong cross pass by Paige Gross on the right side. The assist for Gross was her team-leading 11th of the season.
With 10 minutes left in the half, Taylor Shronk sent a long ball to Youtz, the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, whose reverse stick shot from just inside the top of the circle sailed past ODU goalkeeper Megan Hept for a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, ODU took three shots on goal but all were saved by Millen. Temple's defense stood tough through six second-half corner opportunities for the Monarchs. ODU finished with an 8-2 lead in corners and a 10-7 advantage in shots.
