Field Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller 3-2 over Sacred Heart
9.24.17 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - In a thrilling, come-from-behind victory, senior Rachael Mueller scored the overtime game-winner to lift Temple field hockey to a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. It was the first home win of the year for the Owls, who improve to 3-6 overall while the Pioneers now also stand at 3-6 for the season.
Keys to the Game
> The teams nearly went into halftime still knotted at 0-0, but Sacred Heart was awarded a penalty stroke with 1:49 remaining and made it count to give her team a 1-0 lead at the break.
> Shots were even at halftime, with each team recording five each, while both goalkeepers also recorded five saves in the opening period.
> The stifling heat made it a tough contest for both teams, with game time temperature over 90 degrees and the Astroturf feeling even hotter.
> Sacred Heart took a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute on a corner, but the Owls responded just 34 seconds later. Redshirt senior Sarah Keer took a hard shot on a corner that was deflected by sophomore Kathryn Edgar and then redirected into the cage by sophomore Maddie Merton to get Temple on the board.
> With eight minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Becky Gerhart scored the game-tying goal on a corner with an assist from Edgar.
> Four and a half minutes into overtime, Edgar sent the ball upfield to a wide open Mueller, who drove it into the lower right corner of the cage for the win.
Game Notes
> Shots on goal were even in the contest, with both teams recording eight.
> Sophomore Maddie Lilliock and junior Chloe Johnson each made three saves for the Owls, with Johnson earning the win and improving her record to 2-1 this season.
> The win was the first for the Owls at Howarth Field in 2017. Temple has now split games in each of the past three weekends.
> Edgar assisted on all three goals for the Owls, and is now tied with Mueller for the team lead in assists this season with four.
Quotable
> "Part of our game plan today was to build off of what we did Friday against UConn," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman, "and we were really slow out of the gate to do that so I'm not necessarily happy with that...but we won. So that's a character piece, and we've really been working on controlling the controllables and making ourselves responsible for the end results...it comes down to how we're able to execute under pressure and we did that."
> "I'm definitely glad we finally won on our home turf," said Mueller. "We weren't able to get the result we wanted against UConn but we played amazing and we wanted to carry that over into our game today. Any team in any conference is a big game to us, so this is just helping us in the long run for our own conference play."
